CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CATS WHEN ITS FREEZING COLD CONVERSATIONS WITH THE CATSJericho the Cat: "Let me outttttttt." Me: "Really? You know it's freezing fucking cold out there." Tink the Cat: "That's silly. I think I would know if it was that cold. I'm sitting here, right now, meowing by the back door, I wouldn't be doing this if it was really that cold." Me: "No, I'm serious. You don't want to go out." Jericho the Cat: "I want to go out." Me: "Fine." (I let the cats outside, close the door, and watch them through the door window)Tink the Cat: "OH MY GOD. WHY DID YOU CLOSE THE DOOR. WE CAN'T GET BACK IN. CAN'T YOU SEE THE ICE? I CAN'T FEEL MY PAWS." Jericho the Cat: "Why? WHY? I'm dying, Tink. Hold me and hear my final, frozen breatttttthhhhhsssss....." Tink the Cat: "HE'S DYING. DOES THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY, YOU SADIST? LET US IN!" (I let the cats back in)Me: "I told you." Jericho the Cat: "Oh god. I saw my life flash before my eyes." Tink the Cat: "Don't be absurd, I have no doubt I would remember if you had told me it was that cold. I have an excellent memory. Jericho the Cat: "It was all food and naps, mostly." (five minutes pass)Tink the Cat: "No, really, you shouldn't keep us cooped up in here." Jericho the Cat: "Let us outttttttt" |

The voice of Duke Nukem, Jon St. John, says “Read between the lines…” in reference to his inability to provide specifics on the state of Duke Nukem Forever during his panel discussion at the Music and Games Festival (MAGFest) that took place January 1 – 4 in Alexandria, Virginia. In response to a fan’s question about the status of Duke Nukem Forever St. John stated: I’m not allowed to speak on that subject, sir.
He’s asking about Duke Nukem Forever, let me go ahead and tell you right now that I’m not allowed to talk about Dukem Nukem Forever.
No, no, don’t be disappointed, read between the lines… why am I not allowed to talk about it?NEVER SAY DIE, DUKE |

I think Salvatore is climbing back out of the pit he spent a trilogy digging for himself. I finished up Pirate King and it was very reminiscent of his early books in a good way. He's finally killing off characters that have gotten too old and stale. He's shaking things up and turning Cattie-Brie into an apprentice wizard and letting her enjoy it instead of letting her mope and whine endlessly about being crippled and unable to mix things up in melee anymore. No one is wallowing in angst. It's Drizzt and Regis being witty, Bruenor dealing with the first neutral orc kingdom, and really well-written fight scenes. Even the "DRIZZT IS MUSING" interludes aren't too bad this time around. I really expected Dog Days to be shitty, but it's decent. It's no Dresden Files but the characters are intriguing and the magic system is kind of neat. I like that he uses music and chess metaphors to describe most of the magic. Especially using chess league rules for magical duels. The prose gets necessarily wordy at times and vomits adverbs all over (he ran quickly, you say? and yelled loudly?) but the story is solid. I'm also so thankful that the dog doesn't talk, it just happens to be pure magical energy in the shape of a mutt who sometimes doesn't even understand what people are saying to it. Dropped by Borders yesterday and they finally got Academ's Fury in, so I grabbed that. Then I made a foray into the horror section. You know what? I really don't like Stephen King's stuff very much. I know it's weird, but my feeling is that his ideas and concepts are incredible and I could sit around all day reading the summaries on wikipedia, but I find his actual narrative style extremely slow and difficult to get through. But when I walk into a section of a major chain bookstore and there is literally one wall devoted to his books, I guess I owe it to myself as an aspirant to give them another try. I mean, I liked 'Salem's Lot, so his early stuff should be easy to get into, right? If nothing else it's a study in how to make supernatural horror sell. So I grabbed The Stand, last attempted when I was 13 or 14 and promptly tossed aside in favor of the latest Redwall masterpieces. Oh, and Night Shift to look at his short story structures, since I'm fine-tuning my own shorts for submission by the end of the month. |

Didn't take many pictures in Houston (I have gotten real shy about taking pictures of people, I dunno, I hate being *that guy with the camera*) but here are some pictures of animals who cannot judge me ( Spooky, Flan, Waffles and a caterpillar ) |

AFTERMATH
The chicken and dumplings... were all right! Not great! But all right. Broth, veggies and dumplings were good, chicken was a bit bland. The ~*working theory*~ is that I used low sodium chicken broth and that made the chicken taste less salty than it should? The green beans weren't great, but I could eat them which means they weren't terrible since I don't usually like them. I made some mistakes that I'm too ashamed to admit but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained. Thinkin' I'll try beef-and-turkey meatloaf next time. |

The chicken and dumplings are about an hour and a half away from being ready! It smells delicious but I am worried I messed up somewhere. UGGGH. I hope it turns out. Oh god and I still have to do the green beans. I am the Neurotic Cook. |

in happier news For centuries, the Grey Wardens-the ancient order of guardians, sworn to unite and defend the lands-have been battling the darkspawn forces. Legend spoke that slaying the Archdemon would have put an end to the darkspawn threat for centuries to come, but somehow they remain. You are the Grey Warden Commander and have been entrusted with the duty of rebuilding the order of Grey Wardens and uncovering the secrets of the darkspawn and how they managed to remain. How you choose to rebuild your order, how you resolve the conflict with "The Architect", and how you determine the fate of the darkspawn will be but some of the many complex choices that await and shape your journey as you venture to the new land of Amaranthine. Oh FUCK yes. I can't wait till Paragon Duran gets pulled out of semi-retirement as Alistair's secret adviser and ends up tossed back into the darkspawn melee. Gonna gather up Oghren and my other bros and bash some heads. And then recruit a million dwarf wardens because dwarves fucking own. I wonder what the hell that critter is on the cover, though. The silhouette kind of looks like a shriek, but they don't have that many arms. Maybe a new Broodmother? Or some new spider-ish darkspawn breed? edit OH SHIT -Players will also have the option to import and revise their characters from Dragon Age: Origins, expanding on the customization of their heroes. -Players can also choose to create a brand new Grey Warden from the land of Orlais.-Five new party members will also be available for players to recruit and add to their band of adventurers. Fuck me, guess the human warrior is going on hold until this comes out because Orlais is just fucking fascinating to me. Or hell, maybe an assassin/bard. I can't wait to see what new lines they add to Loghain since the mere mention of Orlaisians sends him into a goddamn stroke. |

auuughhhtl;dr: Majority of voters in favor of higher taxes on the rich, oppose medicare cuts and an excise tax. So the Dems are trying to push ahead with an excise tax, large medicare cuts and by all accounts the House bill's wanting to place higher taxes on upper-income earners is just about irreconcilable with the Senate version. also Reducing spending on Medicare is supported by a plurality of Democrats (44%). However, it is opposed by 70% of Republicans and 56% of voters not affiliated with either major party. we're in hell this is hell |

DIET DAY ONE, BOOK
1260 calories. Pretty good. It would be great if it was 1350 and I had remembered to eat a breakfast bar this morning, but it isn't and I didn't, so it's not! Pretzels at about 9:30 - 160 calories Lunch at around 12:00 - Subway 6 inch ham sandwich, lettuce, tomato, spicy mustard - approx 300 calories and Spicy Chipotle Sun Chips - 200 calories Dinner at around 5:25 - 3x6 tuna rolls = approx 400 calories, ginger salad = approx 200 calories (that's a high estimate, but still) Not gonna make a daily thing about it, but it's a good start. Tomorrow the plan is similar, but I am thinking of getting a french dip and some soup somewhere for dinner. Or maybe I will have sushi for lunch and then go lean cuisine or reheated chili for dinner. Whichever feels the tastiest to me. About 80% through the Larsson book The Girl with the Dragon Tattooand am hooked. It took everything in my power not to finish listening to it once I got home. I am simultaneously elated that I enjoy it this much and disappointed that he died without writing more than three already credited to him. |

Worst sex passages of 2009. I have to admit, they chose a real shiner for the winning entry. Her vulva was opposite my face. The small lips protruded slightly from the pale, domed flesh. This sex was watching at me, spying on me, like a Gorgon's head, like a motionless Cyclops whose single eye never blinks. ... If only I could still get hard, I thought, I could use my prick like a stake hardened in the fire, and blind this Polyphemus who made me Nobody. But my cock remained inert, I seemed turned to stone. ... I pushed my forehead against this vulva, pressing my scar against the hole. Now I was the one looking inside, searching the depths of this body with my radiant third eye, as her own single eye irradiated me and we blinded each other mutually: without moving, I came in an immense splash of white light, as she cried out: 'What are you doing, what are you doing?' and I laughed out loud, sperm still gushing in huge spurts from my penis, jubilant, I bit deep into her vulva to swallow it whole, and my eyes finally opened, cleared, and saw everything. |

One in eight Americans receive foodstamps, including one in four children. One in fifty receive nothing but foodstamps. “This is craziness,” said Representative John Linder, a Georgia Republican who is the ranking minority member of a House panel on welfare policy. “We’re at risk of creating an entire class of people, a subset of people, just comfortable getting by living off the government.”
Mr. Linder added: “You don’t improve the economy by paying people to sit around and not work. You improve the economy by lowering taxes” so small businesses will create more jobs.glghahlkahe;'enaeriohb'eng;uei3h8039h[7y u |

BOOK RECOMMENDATION
I just found out that Spiny Norman's book Mr Shivers is coming out in a week. It's his first book and he's a really excellent writer and a regular contributor in Creative Convention and Book Barn, so everyone should pick this thing up. He wrote it as kind of a mashup between Neil Gaiman, Stephen King and Cormac McCarthy. It takes place during the Great Depression and deals with a man chasing a vagrant who murdered his daughter, teaming up with other self-made hobos who lost loved ones to the mysterious Mr Shivers as they ride the rails and hike through the dustbowl, their bloodlust and thoughts of vengeance growing stronger by the day. It's getting mostly good reviews so far and is holding a 3 1/2 star rating, which is excellent for such a weird mixture of genres. Spiny's an awesome guy and he's been working on this thing for something like six years now, and everyone with a passing interest in strange fiction should support him. |

I've posted a few new things at the fitness and food blog that my Arkansawyer friends and I maintain. Maggie posted a recipe there this morning for baked Reuben balls. I was afraid of her description of homemade thousand island dressing, but it looks like it turned out all right. I'm having a great time writing about food and fitness, and it's great to have a support system in place when you're trying to get healthier. |

Boy Mass Effect is easier when you actually upgrade your weapons and go in with a plan for skill point distribution. Geth fall down a lot faster when you've dumped everything into assault rifles and training and are pumping them full of chemical rounds. I need to figure out a good group makeup, though. I know Shepherd is going to be going shock trooper and just plowing through people once I get Immunity and all the other tanky goodness, but I'm stuck on secondaries. I really want Wrex, so I'm thinking him and Garrus will be a good combo. Wrex locks them down, I light them up and Garrus hovers in the background covering me with a good sniper rifle. |
